THE Surf Coast Shire has received a concept and feasibility plan for the potential development of walking trails in Painkalac Valley in Aireys Inlet.<\/p>\n
Further detailed project planning can now be considered in future budget deliberations, along with submissions for government funding.<\/p>\n
The Walking the Painkalac project proposes establishment of trail loops in lower and upper sections of the valley on land owned or managed by the shire.<\/p>\n
The trails would bring walkers closer to the area\u2019s natural beauty and cultural assets and encourage visitors to linger.<\/p>\n
Detailed planning of the project would include community consultation and development of staging options.<\/p>\n
At their meeting last week, councillors resolved to note the findings of the concept and feasibility plan as well as referring the second option of only creating walking trails to the council\u2019s advocacy program.<\/p>\n
\u201cSurf Coast Shire is already renowned as a walking trails destination,\u201d Anglesea ward councillor Libby Coker said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAdding the beautiful Painkalac Valley to the region\u2019s trail options would present a great opportunity, but much needs to be considered in consultation with community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fellow ward councillor Margot Smith said trails could help draw visitors to Aireys Inlet year-round.<\/p>\n
