GEELONG has some potential to grow a \u201cturquoise\u201d economy, according to new research presented by the Committee for Geelong.<\/p>\n
First suggested as a driver for the region by CfG\u2019s \u201cWinning From Second\u201d report, the turquoise economy is a combination of the \u201cgreen\u201d economy (one that improves wellbeing while reducing environmental risk) and \u201cblue\u201d economy (sustainable use of ocean resources) concepts.<\/p>\n
The second report on CfG\u2019s research into the turquoise economy, in partnership with RMIT\u00a0University, was presented to\u00a0local industry and community stakeholders last week.<\/p>\n
Jago Dodson, Professor of Urban Policy and Director of the Centre for Urban Research at RMIT University, launched the findings.<\/p>\n
He said that while more research was needed to underpin the definition of the turquoise economy, there was significant support for using the turquoise concept for Geelong\u2019s lifestyle attractions from the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cGeelong, with its diverse and high amenity\u00a0coastline, should leverage its unique position as a major point to take advantage of the turquoise leisure economies.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur research shows that there is community\u00a0support for turquoise concept more as a lifestyle and residential attraction strategy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis result aligns with the research reported in \u2018Painting Geelong Green and Blue\u2019 (CfG\u2019s\u00a0first report), suggesting that the use of turquoise may be more widely supported as city branding, as well as the inclusion in the Brand Geelong development.\u201d<\/p>\n
CfG chair Dan Simmonds said the committee was pleased to find elements of the turquoise\u00a0economy already contributing to Geelong\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt highlights that with further development, Geelong could be the pioneer of a new economic footprint, which could potentially be emulated in cities across the world.<\/p>\n
