{"id":18704,"date":"2018-12-19T15:26:48","date_gmt":"2018-12-19T15:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=18704"},"modified":"2018-12-19T19:29:13","modified_gmt":"2018-12-19T19:29:13","slug":"lifes-a-beach-at-the-national-wool-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/living\/lifes-a-beach-at-the-national-wool-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Life\u2019s a beach at the National Wool Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Calling all beachcombers, this summer the beach comes to the National Wool Museum with Sand in the City \u2013 a playful, sand-filled, interactive installation exploring Geelong and the Surf Coast\u2019s legendary beaches.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From now until May 19 next year, kids of all ages will be able to create sandcastles, sculptures and scenes from their imaginations or build their own beach landmarks in Lego using over 1.8 tonnes of sand and 300,000 Lego bricks. Sand in the City is all about creativity, fun and play, with two \u2018hands-in\u2019 augmented reality sandboxes, a giant two-metre-high sandcastle, and models of some of the coastline\u2019s much-loved landmarks, created by Lego certified builder Ryan McNaught set to entertain kids for hours.<\/p>\n<p>City of Greater Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood said Sand in the City will be a fantastic family friendly experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids of all ages will love the interactive nature of the installation and discovering the stories of our much-loved beaches around Geelong and the Surf Coast,\u201d Cr Harwood said.<\/p>\n<p>National Wool Museum director Padraic Fisher said Sand in the City will appeal to kids and adults alike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVisitors can sculpt a sandcastle, piece together a Lego beach shack, or wade through a fluid, digitally enhanced sand pit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBest of all, Sand in the City brings together a reverence and respect for the sea plus an opportunity to tell stories about our legendary beaches. It goes to the heart of how we live and play\u2013 where life really is a beach!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Surrounding the interactive displays are stories and snapshots of Geelong and the Surf Coast\u2019s shimmering coastline, with a captivating film from local documentary maker Glenn Hurst.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a 3D Mural by Melbourne artist, Scott Jansen; Geelong\u2019s famous bollards made from Lego and a relaxing reading space illustrated by much loved Australian author, Allison Lester, which will provide moments of calm, in amongst all the excitement.<\/p>\n<p>Sand in the City is a not to be missed summer experience, which will reveal the diversity and varied ways in which Australians identify with and experience the beach.
