CITY of Greater Geelong councillors have voted to build a new playground and shelter at Sandbar Street Reserve in St Leonards.<\/p>\n
The need for an extra play space was identified in the Geelong Play Strategy 2012\u20132021, with Sandbar Street Reserve chosen because of its central location, surrounding space and accessibility.<\/p>\n
Construction of the new local playground and shelter follows extensive community consultation during September and October this year.<\/p>\n
Community feedback from residents was overwhelmingly in favour of a new local playground at the reserve, with 115 out of 129 responses (89 percent) supportive of the project.<\/p>\n
Bellarine ward councillor Trent Sullivan said while this proposal largely received very strong community support, the three Bellarine Ward councillors gave it close attention given there were some objections.<\/p>\n
This included a visit to the site and speaking with local residents.<\/p>\n
\u201cLooking at the reserve, there\u2019s no doubt it needs something to lift it up and make it a more appealing place to spend time,\u201d Mr Sullivan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cA play space is a good fit given the need in St Leonards.<\/p>\n
\u201cUltimately, there was 89 per cent support for this proposal, so it\u2019s going to be welcomed by the St Leonards community and will become a valued space for local families.<\/p>\n
\u201cA good design will ensure it fits in well with its surrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n
The $30,000 local playground was initially requested by local residents and was funded as part of the City\u2019s 2016-17 budget, with construction expected to be completed in 2019.<\/p>\n
The project also includes an additional allocation of $15,000 for a shelter to be funded as part of this year\u2019s annual playground upgrades budget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
