BARWON Coast is working to give the threatened hooded plover a chance at survival this summer by putting Temporary Exclusion Zones in place and supporting the enforcement of relevant laws.<\/p>\n
Sadly, on December 18, Barwon Coast reported that one male adult and one chick were missing (presumed dead) from the 16-17W area of Ocean Grove Beach.<\/p>\n
A post to social media said the cause of death was unknown, but what they did know was that many dogs off-leash were observed running through the area prior to the birds\u2019 disappearance.<\/p>\n
Barwon Coast chief executive officer Gary McPike said the temporary exclusion zones would be declared on an \u201cas-needs\u201d basis and would vary in place and location along the coastline.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder the Crown Land (Reserves) Act 1978 regulations, Barwon Coast can declare temporary exclusion zones,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt present we have one temporary exclusion zone in place to reduce the disturbance to hooded plovers chicks between 16 and 17W on Ocean Grove Main Beach.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also have numerous eggs and nest sites at other areas on the Barwon Coast, which are well signed, but won\u2019t be declared a temporary exclusion zone until any chicks hatch.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr McPike said he asked the public not to walk through the exclusion zones.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven walking along at the water\u2019s edge is a huge disturbance as this is right where the chicks feed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou must take the inland path to walk around the area.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said enforcement could also play an important part in protecting the hooded plover.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is important for people to remember that hooded plovers are protected, and taking, destroying or disturbing hooded plovers, their chicks or nests is a crime,\u201d he said. \u201cAllowing your dog to chase or harass wildlife is also a crime.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe community are encouraged to confidentially report any information related to people taking or destroying wildlife to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.\u201d There is also an increased presence of a City of Greater Geelong local laws officer on the Barwon Coast, who is focussing on enforcing dog regulations.
