THE Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) and the Otway Coast Committee (OCC) recently started works to reinstate access along the Apollo Bay and Marengo foreshore, following winter storms that caused extensive damage.<\/p>\n
DELWP and the OCC are working alongside Regional Roads Victoria (RRV), Colac Otway Shire and coastal engineers GHD to develop next steps for the Apollo Bay and Marengo foreshores, following consultation with the local community.<\/p>\n
Regional Manager, Land and Built Environment Programs, Greg Leece said they were prioritising access points along the beach to ensure everyone could get onto the beach safely during summer.<\/p>\n
\u201cSand will be carted from Wild Dog Creek to cover the rock revetments that were built by RRV last\u00a0month, and spotters will be on site to ensure the safety of the Hooded Plovers,\u201d Mr Leece said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe construction of a footpath is underway along the revetments, replacing the path that was destroyed during the winter storms.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe understand it\u2019s coming into peak season for the Apollo Bay community so we\u2019re working to install stairs along the foreshore, over the RRV revetments, so everyone has safe access to the beach.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said that DELWP engaged coastal engineers GHD to design and report on short-term remedial works and long-term options for coastal erosion in Apollo Bay and Marengo.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese options are available to view at length in the GHD Apollo Bay Coastal Protection Report online via the Engage Victoria page.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re keen for the community to look over the report and learn about the recommendations that are featured including erosion control options, as erosion is going to be a long-term issue for the township.<\/p>\n
\u201cSand cartage is going to be an ongoing process for the Apollo Bay and Marengo communities, as the climate continues to change and have erosion events that affect the foreshore.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt this stage, we\u2019re working towards finding the next steps for erosion at Apollo Bay and Marengo, and we will continue working with multiple agencies and the community to find the best solution for the area.\u201d<\/p>\n
