THE Caring For Our Bays program is a Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula based initiative aimed at encouraging appreciation of Corio Bay and the Bellarine shoreline of Port Phillip Bay.<\/p>\n
We aim to connect local residents and visitors to this spectacular environment and be aware of litter, to understand the impact it can have on our coastline and to inspire behavioural change.<\/p>\n
Caring For Our Bays have created \u201c8 Heroes\u201d which are flagship species of our bays and waterways.<\/p>\n
These species include the Australian Fur Seal, Burrunan Dolphin, Weedy Seadragon, Australasian Gannet, Growling Grass Frog and our newest species include the Southern Fiddler Ray, the Angasi Oyster and the Eleven-armed Sea Star.<\/p>\n
Keep an eye out for these \u2018hero\u2019 posters at your local piers, foreshores and boat ramps.<\/p>\n
We engage with local and state government, schools, community groups and businesses in addition to events and festivals, including the Queenscliff Music Festival.<\/p>\n
In addition to these engagements, we also manage an exciting citizen science project aimed at understanding the source and cause of litter.<\/p>\n
We have more than 20 volunteers that participate in litter audits every month at 15 locations around Geelong and the Bellarine.<\/p>\n
We are looking for additional volunteers to assist with this project.<\/p>\n
