Documentary film “The Stagginfg Post” will be screened at the Aireys Inlet Rural Australians For Refugees’ (AIRAR) next fundraising event on Sunday 24 February, telling a story of hope, courage and connection.<\/b><\/p>\n
Detailing Australia’s refugee crisis and nation’s “turn back the boats” policy, the documentary follows two Afghan Hazara asylum seekers – Muzara and Khadim – who find themselves in an Indonesian refugee camp after being sent back before reaching the Australia.<\/p>\n
Spending many uncertain years in the camp inspired Muzara and Khadim to strengthen the refugee community by establishing a refugee education school, the Cisaura Refugee Learning Centre (CRLC).<\/p>\n
The school has gone on to provide a model for refugee education worldwide through the United Nations Commissioner for refugees with 1,500 at over 10 refugee-managed learning centres in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Co-founder Muzafar Ali will be special guest at the screening.<\/p>\n
“The school acted like a magnet – it connected us with many people.” he said.<\/p>\n
“They were waiting for refugees to do something and then they accompanied us.”<\/p>\n
“The staging post has given me the opportunity to tell my story and my people’s story.”<\/p>\n
AIRAR member Cecily Mason said the film tells an inspiring and uplifting story.<\/p>\n
“Muzafar is one those rare individuals who can take adversity and convert it into opportunity.” she said.<\/p>\n
All proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards supporting the CRLC.<\/p>\n
The film will be screened on Sunday February 24 at the Aireys inlet pub from 3PM.<\/p>\n
