THE State Government will fund $2.69 million for the Destination Queenscliff project on the condition highly contentious eco cabins are not built at Shortland\u2019s Bluff.<\/p>\n
Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville announced the funding at the Engine Shed in Point Lonsdale on Friday, along with $500,000 for the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse Reserve \u2013 Stage 1 project.<\/p>\n
Ms Neville said \u201cthe Destination Queenscliff\u201d project would deliver a visitor hub, viewing platform and landscape improvements at the Queenscliff Lighthouse Reserve, while also protecting the area\u2019s rich natural and heritage assets, including Shortland\u2019s Bluff.<\/p>\n
She said the Borough of Queenscliffe\u2019s original proposal included a funding request for four eco cabins to be built at Shortland\u2019s Bluff.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, this proposal was not acceptable to the local community and after my advocacy to the Minister for Regional Development we have approved the full funding of Destination Queenscliff subject to the eco cabins not being built on Shortland\u2019s Bluff, but at a more appropriate location,\u201d Ms Neville said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will work with the council and the community to ensure that any cabins are constructed in an appropriate way and place.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I understand the Commonwealth Government funding for six cabins will also be altered to reflect this outcome and the community wishes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mayor Tony Francis said the Borough of Queenscliffe welcomed the state government\u2019s announcement to fund the two significant projects.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil has heard the message loud and clear from the community, these are important locations that require well considered and thoughtfully planned improvements,\u201d Cr Tony Francis said.<\/p>\n
\u201cImportantly, the establishment of the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse Reserve reference group will enable the community to have a direct connection to the implementation of the Point Lonsdale project.<\/p>\n
