{"id":21042,"date":"2019-03-13T20:40:49","date_gmt":"2019-03-13T20:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=21042"},"modified":"2019-03-13T20:41:05","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T20:41:05","slug":"women-make-headway-in-local-medicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/living\/women-make-headway-in-local-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Women make headway in local medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The number of females working&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>in the medical sector has seen an&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>exciting swing, with more women&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>hired as Barwon Health intern&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>doctors over the last decade than&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>men.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since 2006, the number of female medical interns at Barwon Health has surpassed male employees by 79, breaking down gender barriers in the once male-dominated profession.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping in tune with this year\u2019s \u201cBalance for Better\u201d theme for International Women\u2019s Day (Friday March 8), Barwon Health is celebrating its expanding workplace by recognising the female employees who make up 75 percent of overall staff.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor Christine Somerville, Barwon Health\u2019s director of nephrology who supervises training for hospital medical officers, said the best candidates are always hired for the job during the recruitment process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn nearly all medical schools, there are more women than male students now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s been the case for many years, and Geelong certainly has had significantly more over the past decade or so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the fact that women comprise over 50 per cent of medical students and young doctors, there\u2019s still relatively few women in the more senior medical positions of the industry, but I think that will change for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor Somerville said although the landscape of medicine is changing, there are still some areas where women are \u201cunder-represented\u201d, including urology and orthopaedic surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut even there Geelong is fairing well with Kathryn McLeod one of our respected urologists. In the latter half of last year, all three of Barwon Health\u2019s new orthopaedic registrars were women,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She also said women are likely to be overlooked for promotions due to time spent raising a family, with men more able to advance their careers without having to make personal sacrifices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly in my career, people would assume you were the nurse, but that\u2019s all changed now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a really old-fashioned view because there are so many more women doctors and male nurses.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The number of females working&nbsp;in the medical sector has seen an&nbsp;exciting swing, with more women&nbsp;hired as Barwon Health intern&nbsp;doctors over the last decade than&nbsp;men.
