THE federal government has increased funding for grants from the Safer Communities Fund following the terrorist attack in New Zealand.<\/p>\n
Religious and community organisations and schools can apply for funding to increase security at their premises.<\/p>\n
Corangamite federal member Sarah Henderson said her government would provide $55 million in Round 4 for grants ranging from $50,000 to $1.5 million.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese grants can be used for safety enhancements such as CCTV cameras, lighting, fencing, bollards, alarms and other security systems.<\/p>\n
\u201cPriority will be given to religious schools and places of religious worship or assembly, but grants will also be provided to schools, community organisations and local councils for security measures to protect children who are at risk of harassment or attack stemming from racial or religious intolerance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Henderson said the Morrison Government is committed to keeping every Australian safe.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one should have to fear for their safety and everyone has the right to religious freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n
This latest funding announcement brings the total amount available under the Safer Communities Fund to $119.9 million between 2016-17 and 2020-21, with about 340 grants made to date.<\/p>\n
