THE Geelong Manufacturing Council is taking applications for two initiatives aimed at preparing young people for a career in advanced manufacturing.<\/p>\n
Advanced manufacturing is a major growth area in Geelong. Manufacturing no longer involves a heavy focus on assembly line workers, but now relies on more highly skilled employees.<\/p>\n
Every day, there are thousands of products designed and manufactured from raw materials produced locally. These include power and fabrics in your home, food products, plastics and transport components.<\/p>\n
Engineers, scientists, researchers, designers, skilled tradespeople and other skilled workers across these industries work to create innovative solutions to everyday problems.<\/p>\n
The two initiatives \u2013 presented by the GMC, Skilling the Bay, the Victorian government and industry partners \u2013 give students in Years 9 to 12 the rare opportunity to see advanced manufacturing, digital technologies and engineering up close in real-world businesses, speak with role models from across a range of careers and meet senior leaders during the tours, as well as hone their leadership and communication skills through workshops.<\/p>\n
GLAM (Girls Leading Advanced Manufacturing) is an inspiring program introducing female students to the diversity of careers and pathways in advanced manufacturing, while GFLOI (Geelong Future Leaders of Industry) is an immersion program for students to experience the diversity or exciting careers and pathways in advanced manufacturing, engineering and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) trades.<\/p>\n
