INDEPENDENT candidate for Corangamite Damien Cole has called for urgent action to fix problems with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).<\/p>\n
He said he was \u201cabsolutely astounded\u201d that the federal budget\u2019s projected contribution to the scheme was down $6.5 billion over the next two years, with a $3.8 billion underspend in the 2018-19 financial year alone.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis to me is of great concern, as the NDIS has great potential, although from numerous conversations I have with our community, it is far from perfect.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is a lack of consistency and flexibility, while many people are frustrated by the amount of administrative red tape.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur government must adequately address the numerous flaws within the scheme, or we are at risk of\\ the NDIS becoming a huge issue for our nation, which is unacceptable, particularly in a such a prosperous and wealthy country as Australia.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a moral responsibility to support those within our community who are most vulnerable and it is the Australian way to help those less fortunate.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnyone struggling with aspects of their lives, whether it be due to mental health, permanent or significant disabilities, need our government to ensure a safe and healthy future with no-one left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said more than 4.3 million Australians lived with a disability, \u201cwhich makes supporting the most vulnerable individuals within our communities an essential responsibility for us all\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnsuring access to the support required is such an important issue, as our physical and mental well-being is an essential part of life, particularly as our society accelerates into the 21st century at such a rapid rate.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s often something that is difficult to discuss, which can be a challenge and as someone with a platform, it\u2019s imperative I play my part.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cole has been working with local charity Ocean Mind for the past 12 months, providing therapeutic surf lessons for young people with mental health issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cNumerous reports around the world are pointing to the various positive effects surfing can have and is a great way for people to overcome fears, gain confidence and put aside life’s challenges, even if only for a couple of hours,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n
