TENS of thousands of people turned out to Anzac Day services across the region.<\/p>\n
The Torquay RSL and the Anzac Day Dawn Service planning group were caught \u201con the wrong foot\u201d by the by the near-10,000 strong crowd that turned up this year\u2019s Point Danger service.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the centenary commemorations of the various battles of World War I had finished in 2018, we were prepared to see lower attendances this year,\u201d Torquay RSL president Bob Tyler said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, Victoria Police estimates of the crowd ran at 10,000 and I think most of those headed for the gunfire breakfast afterwards.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, we ran out of sausages, bread and coffee earlier than were expected.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Tyler apologised for the Gunfire Breakfast shortfalls and said next year\u2019s breakfast would cater sufficiently for those wishing to warm up after the service at Point Danger.<\/p>\n
He also apologised for a mix up that meant the New Zealand national anthem wasn\u2019t played at the service.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the time approached for the playing and singing of the national anthems, the New Zealander chosen to present his country\u2019s anthem was not at Point Danger.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter desperately searching for someone tolpresent the anthem, and not finding a singer who knew the words, it was decided to drop the item in the order of service.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can assure everyone that for our 2020 Dawn Service, we will ensure that the New Zealand anthem is played even if we have to play a recorded version.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Anglesea Anzac Commemorative Service and March was a success.<\/p>\n
The guest speaker this year was Major Peter Winter (retired).<\/p>\n
His talk focused on servicemen, their families (who also serve), their return to the community and their post-service difficulties.<\/p>\n
In particular, he highlighted the Vietnam servicemen, the moratorium movement at the time, and the gradual coming together, acceptance and support for all groups.<\/p>\n
The Queenscliff Dawn Service was well attended and run by former councillor and Vietnam veteran Graham Christie.<\/p>\n
There were also large crowds at services and marches in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
