ABOUT 50 concerned residents rallied earlier this week for increased safety of school children at the entrance of the 13th Beach Golf Links Estate.<\/p>\n
Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson, who joined children, parents and community members at the rally, is calling on the State Government to reduce the stretch of Barwon Heads Road to 80kmh (currently 100kmh) as a matter of urgency while it considers a proper traffic management solution, such as traffic lights, a or roundabout.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe estate has around 200 homes, with residents including many young families,\u201d Ms Henderson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany children who live in the 13th Beach Golf Links Estate catch school buses on Barwon Heads Road, either heading to school in Ocean Grove or Barwon Heads, or in the opposite direction to Geelong.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe road is especially busy in the mornings with morning commuter traffic, at 100kmh heading into Geelong.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Henderson said children currently needed to wait for a gap in traffic to cross Barwon Heads Road to wait for the bus into Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the afternoon, kids also cross Barwon Heads Road if returning home from school in Geelong,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI watched children wait more than five minutes to then manoeuvre dangerous traffic across the road.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Henderson said local residents were also finding it very difficult to exit the estate from Tomara Drive.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have called on the state government to urgently address this pressing safety issue,\u201d Ms Henderson said.<\/p>\n
