They were squealing with enjoyment in the middle of Melbourne\u2019s concrete jungle. With a bit of nature, they\u2019d created their own fun. Sadly, if council officers came along, they\u2019d have removed the branches and put a stop to it.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a growing problem that so many people are worried about kids being exposed to even a little risk. They\u2019re taking the fun out of growing up and they\u2019re in danger of exposing their kids to much worse.<\/p>\n
If kids don\u2019t get outside playing and interacting with others, they\u2019re at serious risk of mental health problems, obesity, diabetes and more.<\/p>\n
One in five kids in Geelong already experience some sort of mental disorder, according to Barwon Health researchers. That\u2019s 12,000 kids. We don\u2019t fully know the causes but we know our society has changed drastically in recent decades.<\/p>\n
Marriage break-ups are very disruptive to children\u2019s lives, too much\u00a0 screen-time, excessive sugar and fatty junk food, cottonwool kids driven to school instead of walking or riding, helicopter parents fussing excessively over their kids\u2026<\/p>\n
These all contribute to nature-deficit syndrome. It\u2019s what happens to kids stuck inside on games and phones and iPads.<\/p>\n
Professor Peter Vuillermin tells me the relationship between nature connectedness and mental health is a question being tackled in the Barwon Infant Study.<\/p>\n
Peter is Chair in Medicine and Director of Research at Deakin\u00a0 University\/Barwon Health University Hospital Geelong.<\/p>\n
\u201cEarly life experiences are an important determinant of life-long mental health,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur modern environment is associated with an increasing burden of mental health problems, including anxiety and\u00a0 depression, and many\u00a0 researchers are interested in the\u00a0concept of \u201cnature connectedness\u201d as a protective factor.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, improved evidence is needed. We hope the findings will contribute to providing our kids with a healthy and happy start to life.\u201d<\/p>\n
At Villawood, in the meantime, we\u2019re creating playgrounds with as much challenge and risk as Australian standards and\u00a0 councils will allow. We use basic elements or kids to play in \u2013 timbers, trees, rocks, water and sand.<\/p>\n
A key focus of our society is protecting our kids but there are too many anxious parents and authorities keeping kids from physical challenges they need to face.<\/p>\n
The risk mitigation they\u2019re using to\u00a0 rule kids\u2019 lives is actually putting the long-term physical and emotional development of kids in danger.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
