{"id":25272,"date":"2019-06-26T03:49:44","date_gmt":"2019-06-26T03:49:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=25272"},"modified":"2019-06-27T00:18:21","modified_gmt":"2019-06-27T00:18:21","slug":"barwon-heads-and-ocean-grove-enjoy-good-in-gauge-ment-with-record-rain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/barwon-heads-and-ocean-grove-enjoy-good-in-gauge-ment-with-record-rain\/","title":{"rendered":"Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove enjoy good in-gauge-ment with record rain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE soft ground, big puddles and full wetlands tell it anecdotally, and a rain gauge at a local golf club tells it specifically.<\/p>\n<p>The last two months in Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove have been close to the wettest May-June period since the Barwon Heads Golf Club started keeping records for the Bureau of Meteorology in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Localised rainfall from Wednesday to Friday last week saw the club\u2019s gauge record 36mls over the three days, taking the rainfall so far for June to 96mls, not far off the 2012 record of 102mls for the month.<\/p>\n<p>Falls were heaviest to 9am Thursday and Friday when the club recorded 20mls and 12mls, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior forecaster Christie Johnson said the 20mls recorded on Thursday was the highest total in the state for the day, reflecting a localised event that may have seen even more significant falls just to the east in Ocean Grove and Point Lonsdale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically, there was an unstable south-to-southwesterly airflow and we saw a bit of a convergence line where southerlies over Barwon Heads converged with south westerlies from the Surf Coast,\u201d Ms Johnson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call it a cold-air field, which is basically cold air flow behind a cold front.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSatellite pictures show a convergence line over the Bellarine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said rainfall fields data extrapolated from radar images showed that Ocean Grove and Point Lonsdale could have received 40-50mls, but BOM relies on ground proofs to test those figures and it didn\u2019t have weather stations east of the Barwon Heads Golf Club on the Bellarine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25519\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25519\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25519\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/BHOG-Rain-June-20-24-hour-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/BHOG-Rain-June-20-24-hour-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/06\/BHOG-Rain-June-20-24-hour.jpg 543w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25519\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BOM rainfall fields data extrapolated from radar images showed that Ocean Grove and Point Lonsdale could have received 40-50mls on Thursday last week.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBut given the golf course figure was the highest in the state for Thursday, it\u2019s picking up on that convergence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With more rain forecast for the end of June it\u2019s likely a monthly rainfall record at the Barwon Heads Golf Club will be broken for the second month running.<\/p>\n<p>The 119mls that filled the gauge in during May was a record for that month.
