THEY are certainly doing something right at Anglesea Tennis Club, one of the 50 top clubs in Victoria, membership-wise, with a court and clubhouse set-up second to none – truly a hub for the tennis fan in that area and far beyond too!<\/p>\n
Founded in 1960, Anglesea Tennis Club has come a very long way from humble beginnings, with club president and life member Tony Whelan arriving as a teenager in 1973 and being very much a part of the club\u2019s progress from that point on.<\/p>\n
Back then, with just two asphalt courts, the club was struggling to put a mixed team on the court, but in the years that followed, the club has continue to grow and thrive and now provides a fantastic tennis facility for Anglesea and much of the surrounding area too.<\/p>\n
Those two original asphalt courts back in the 1970s were soon crowded as tennis was steadily moving towards its \u201cgolden years\u201d. Soon there were two more and in 1982 four en tout cas courts were constructed, mainly via the efforts of club members, with assistance from Alcoa and Shire of Barrabool. Not to mention an extension of the clubrooms and internal toilets! Anglesea Tennis Club was on a big upward spiral!<\/p>\n
In the early 2000s another step to improve facilities came to fruition, when drought conditions moved the club\u2019s committee to replace those four en tout cas courts with Modgrass. Then court lighting and new fencing was put in place with club funds and much-valued help from the state government and Surfcoast Shire.<\/p>\n
Most sporting clubs have that special person who makes a difference and for Anglesea Tennis Club it was the arrival of Sue Forsyth in 2002, who was soon thereafter on the club\u2019s committee as the skilled treasurer, then later as a life member too. Sue has been an active participant in so many projects at the club and her dedication is a positive inspiration!<\/p>\n
There is Saturday competition tennis, senior and junior, midweek ladies, veteran social play on Monday and Friday mornings and a social night competition under lights on Wednesdays.<\/p>\n
