THE City of Greater Geelong has partnered with an Australian children\u2019s charity to deliver a \u201cworld class\u201d playground at Rippleside Park.<\/p>\n
Geelong mayor Bruce Harwood met with representatives from Variety at the site last week to formalise the commitment, with an all-inclusive playground expected to begin construction in the 2020-21 financial year.<\/p>\n
The initiative is part of the city\u2019s \u201cclever and creative\u201d vision and will combine innovative design with specialised engineering to create a space that children of all abilities can enjoy.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe aim to be a city that is inclusive and welcoming of everyone,\u201d Cr Harwood said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a project we have been working to make a reality for some time and I\u2019m excited to see us come up with a playspace that is truly innovative and world class. Once finished, it will have a huge positive impact on the lives of Geelong children, families and our whole community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Geelong residents will be offered the chance to provide ideas and suggestions for the new facility through a public consultation opportunity once a project designer has been appointed.<\/p>\n
As part of the partnership, Variety has committed to working with Geelong businesses and individuals to garner financial support.<\/p>\n
Cr Harwood said the current playground at Rippleside Park opened in 2001 and was made possible thanks to time and money donated by about 1,500 generous locals.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis redevelopment will give us an opportunity to show our sense of community spirit and togetherness once again, and to create something genuinely special.\u201d<\/p>\n
Variety chief executive officer David Sexton said the organisation believes all kids deserve a \u201cfair go\u201d and was proud to team with COGG.<\/p>\n
