ST Leonards Primary School teacher Christine Layley has been recognised for her commitment and dedication to public education celebrating 40 years in the job.<\/p>\n
Mrs Layley was among more than 400 Victorians who recently attended the Department of Education and Training\u2019s Recognition of Service ceremony for employees who had reached 40, 45, 50 and 55 years of service in 2019.<\/p>\n
Mrs Layley worked as a teacher at a school in Wangaratta for 32 years, before she moved to St Leonards six years ago and started working as a student wellbeing and support teacher at the primary school.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy last principal said to me: \u2018Don\u2019t ever discount the experience you have\u2019,\u201d Mrs Layley said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I think I had 12 months off when we moved down here and I did some volunteering at Karingal with young adults and numeracy and literacy, and I thought, I\u2019ve still got something to contribute here, so when the position came up I thought it was a perfect opportunity to keep making a difference.<\/p>\n
\u201cI work with kids\u2019 intervention and make sure if there are any worries or concerns they have an opportunity to talk to someone about it, and with families too who need support in lots of different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mrs Layley said it had been lovely making a contribution to the school and working alongside principal Jenny Cowburn.<\/p>\n
Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said everyone remembered an inspiring teacher, educator or principal who inspired passions or offered support to reach their full potential.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wish to congratulate and thank all of our long serving teachers, principals and school staff in Bellarine on behalf of the many young people whose lives have been touched by their years of hard work in schools in our region.\u201d<\/p>\n
The total 408 recipients have devoted more than 17,000 years combines to teaching. During this time, they\u2019ve led progress in education and helped young people to thrive through learning, and by creating opportunities.<\/p>\n
