THE Surf Coast Shire has backed a proposal from the community for the former Winchelsea Shire Hall to become the Winchelsea Cultural Centre.<\/p>\n
Councillors resolved at their July meeting to support a community working group recommendation on preferred use of the historic building.<\/p>\n
They also committed $65,000 to a 12-month implementation plan working towards realising the vision for the centre.<\/p>\n
The Former Winchelsea Shire Hall Community Working Group was a cross-section of residents who responded to a council call for advice about the future of the building.<\/p>\n
The working group led consultation, which included a survey and drop-in session.<\/p>\n
Members sought community inspiration on use of the building and identified hopes for a centre focused on cultural uses, visitor information, spaces for local history and art displays and a meeting place\/caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n
The group defined the community vision as \u201cThe shire hall is the heart of our town, a place where the past comes alive and the future is full of promise.<\/p>\n
A safe and welcoming place for local residents and visitors\u201d.<\/p>\n
Shire mayor Rose Hodge said the council was pleased to have supported a community-led vision.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know how important the former shire hall is to Winchelsea and the surrounding district. So we\u2019re delighted that local people have shared their ideas and are keen to be involved in bringing the vision to life.<\/p>\n
\u201cUltimately, the Winchelsea Cultural Centre will be successful if we all embrace the vision and get involved. Council has listened to the group\u2019s advice that we can help to bring some life back into the building over the next few months.\u201d<\/p>\n
Winchelsea Ward councillor James McIntyre thanked the group members for their commitment and energy in identifying a positive future for the building.<\/p>\n
