FALLEN Otway timber is being recycled as survey boundary pegs and stakes in Villawood Properties\u2019 new residential developments at Wandana and Coridale, Lara.<\/p>\n

The scheme is financing the planting of thousands of new trees and the rehabilitation of degraded Otways waterways.<\/p>\n

Villawood surveyors from the Lyssna Group are working with the Gellibrand-based Land and Water Resources Otway Catchment (LAWROC) on the peg and stake recycling.<\/p>\n

The scheme finances the planting of 500 trees for every 40-lot stage of a subdivision Lyssna undertakes.<\/p>\n

With 200 lots at Wandana and 1,150 lots at Coridale, that\u2019s thousands of trees.<\/p>\n

\u201cWandana alone will translate to at least 1200 trees being planted over the course of the project,\u201d Lyssna director Scott Jukes said.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoridale Stage 1 has 50 lot boundaries to be marked, which will result in about 300 trees planted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will add up to around 14,000 trees planted by the end of the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis doesn\u2019t include additional pegging and staking which may be required to set out sound mitigation walls, electricity easements and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n

LAWROC salvages fallen trees that were previously destined for burning piles from Otways farms and mills them into pegs and stakes.<\/p>\n

The Wandana and Coridale survey work helps LAWROC improve catchment health in the Otways.<\/p>\n

This includes tree cultivation and propagation, fencing, plantings along drainage and stream verges, research and environmental analysis.<\/p>\n

These works help prevent erosion, improve water quality and habitat, protecting vulnerable and highly significant landscapes, flora and fauna.<\/p>\n

The collaboration is part of Lyssna\u2019s and Villawood\u2019s leading role in raising of sustainability credentials of residential housing.<\/p>\n

Already, Villawood donates a block of bushland to the state forest system for every residential lot it sells \u2013 running at 520 hectares to date.<\/p>\n

Villawood is also spearheading residential projects, such as Melbourne\u2019s Aquarevo, which offer a 70 per cent reduction in water use and 60 per cent in non-renewables with high-tech solar batteries.<\/p>\n

It partners with public utilities such as South East Water, and private companies such as Biolfilta, to achieve industry-vanguard sustainable outcomes, and boasts numerous industry awards for its efforts.<\/p>\n

LAWROC\u2019s Andrew McLennan said the group was trying to utilise, rather than burn, the fallen timber with revenue from it used to rehabilitate the Charleys Creek area near Gellibrand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe logs might be three or four tonnes but whatever hits the ground we try to utilise,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe generally use a truck and a tractor, and we take them straight to our little mill, make the surveyor\u2019s pegs and stakes, all sorts things from them.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe use the sawdust for vegie gardens and the offcuts will go into the fireplace.\u201d<\/p>\n

LAWROC Landcare will conduct its annual Spring Planting Day on Saturday 14 September between 9am and 3pm, meeting first at the Gellibrand River Hall.<\/p>\n
