DUE to the huge numbers they\u2019ve been enjoying, the Bellarine Bears are extending their junior T-ball program into the off-season.<\/p>\n
The program was initially set to run for just 10 weeks, but the positive response means it will continue running next term.<\/p>\n
There are currently just under 30 participants in the program, with their ages ranging from four to 10.<\/p>\n
David Crotty, who runs the program, says it creates a fun environment where the kids can improve their skills at their own speed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey learn multiple levels of skills with their fielding, throwing, running, hand-eye coordination, and it gives them a safe and easy environment to improve those skills.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Crotty also says there is an emphasis on getting parents involved, allowing them to practice simple skills with their kids at home and learn the sport together. He says that not only the kids enjoy the program, but that \u201cthe parents enjoy it as well\u201d.<\/p>\n
The program caters for a range of skill levels, often creating a smooth pathway for participants into the Bears\u2019 Under 12 side.<\/p>\n
Mr Crotty says the focus is on creating a safe and fun environment for the children to improve.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe use modified equipment: tennis balls to start throwing with. Then we can move them up to a soft baseball and a harder baseball, so it\u2019s a gradual progression of their skills and they don\u2019t get scared off by getting hit by a hard ball for instance.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey can develop at their own pace, and we get a lot of fun out of watching them do it and progress.\u201d<\/p>\n
