A NEW drinking fountain will shortly be installed at the Portarlington Recreation Reserve.
\nThe City of Greater Geelong has confirmed that the new fountain will also include a tap that can be used by dog walkers.
\nDirector of City Services Guy Wilson-Browne said it would have a spring-loaded handle, to stop it being turned on and left to run needlessly.
\n\u201cThe old drinking tap was damaged and needed to be removed,\u201d Mr Wilson-Browne said.
\nThe new drinking fountain comes after local Judy Bracken contacted the Bellarine Times about the taps at Portarlington Recreation Reserve being sealed.
\n\u201cDespite it being a Recreation Reserve – football, netball, tennis, walkers even kite flyers… not a drop to drink,\u201d Ms Bracken said.
\n\u201cThere\u2019s probably drinking water available in the club houses, but this is not accessible for general usage.\u201d
\nMs Bracken said the tap at the shelter of the rear football oval was not only disconnected, it was removed, while two taps near the main football oval were disconnected and the on\/off handle removed.
\n\u201cLast weekend saw two major football matches and quite large crowds of supporters.
\n\u201cGeelong events often have a Barwon Water free drinking truck to attend.
