{"id":27464,"date":"2019-09-12T08:00:39","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T22:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=27464"},"modified":"2019-09-10T15:57:43","modified_gmt":"2019-09-10T05:57:43","slug":"27464","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/real-estate\/27464\/","title":{"rendered":"At Home With Stephanie Asher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Stephanie Asher likes to solve problems \u2013 firstly in her business career and now in civic life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The managing partner of The Geelong Consulting Group has been a consultant for more than two decades and describes her job these days as \u201ca corporate consultant &#8211; strategic planning, communications, project management\u2026 problem solving\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie stood for the City of Greater Geelong council nearly two years ago and was the first candidate elected in the Bellarine Ward. She has since been appointed chair of the strategy and communications portfolio and deputy chair of the sustainable development portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years Stephanie has also tried her hand as a biographer, penning <em>The Footy Lady<\/em> (published by Melbourne University Press in 2017) &#8211; the story of Dr Susan Alberti and her trailblazing life of determination and resilience.<\/p>\n<p><em>My Coastal Home<\/em> visited Stephanie at her home in Ocean Grove.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Born<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was born in Adelaide but moved to Geelong for a couple of years, and then to Melbourne. I moved to Ocean Grove from Fitzroy nearly 20 years ago as here is such a fabulous place to bring up kids.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Family<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I met Rob in 1999 and we\u2019ve been married since 2002. We have three amazing children, who are now all teenagers. I have one older sister, and parents who live on the Mornington Peninsula; the dark side! Mum\u2019s recently moved to Portarlington \u2013 she saw the light and came to the Bellarine Peninsula. She\u2019ll be local in about two decades.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Happy place<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pretty much any Australian surf beach if the temperature is over 25, preferably with sunshine. Walking, running, swimming, sitting, lying\u2026 I enjoy the beach in many forms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Footy Lady<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I still see myself as a biographer, but only when I get the time. It doesn\u2019t pay very well. I enjoyed it, but it was exhausting. We\u2019re nearly at 10,000 sales now. Susan\u2019s the workhorse, though, she sells heaps of them whenever she speaks. I\u2019ve got a few people in mind for the next biography, which I won\u2019t say because everyone will laugh at me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life as a councillor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably very similar to what I imagined (before being elected) but the councillor group is more interesting than I thought it would be. The more you get to know people, the more interesting they become, and of course there\u2019s the process we\u2019re going through at the moment with everyone jostling for leadership positions; it\u2019s fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27466\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/09\/Asher-laptops-e1568091017585.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laptops<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I currently have four on the go, including my own business, key clients and council. As a consultant for more than 25 years, my work is very mobile and in the past few years it\u2019s more and more on the phone, too. I was inspired by Cadel Evans\u2019 driver, Alan \u2013 who lives in my street \u2013 when he said Cadel does most of his work on the phone. It\u2019s lighter than a laptop and I can have multiple email accounts on the one device!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27467\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/09\/Asher-painting-e1568091052311.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paintings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I dabble really badly with painting when I can make the time, but I\u2019m also interested in supporting local artists. The most recent one was Warwick Manderson, who has done a lovely piece showing a stand of moonah trees in Barwon Heads. It was really important to me because we worked together to increase the protection of trees in his street and it was a great example of community, councillor and council officer collaborating. So I bought a couple of his artworks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27468\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/09\/Asher-jasmine-e1568091078782.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"833\" height=\"1250\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jasmine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Summer is on the way. If I could grow jasmine on the walls inside the house, I would. The smell is the memory of summer to me, it takes me back to my childhood \u2013 I can\u2019t remember where, I think it must have been in our house in North Balwyn.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27469\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/09\/Asher-chickens-e1568091111724.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"833\" height=\"1250\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chickens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not only do we take it for granted that our eggs are always fresh, and often still warm, they are really good and munching all the food waste. With three teenagers, we go through a mountain of food \u2013 I work for Coles at the moment and I really should buy shares, given how much we spend there. Between the chickens, our dog, the two cats and the compost bin, there is not much organic waste.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27518\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/09\/Asher-shoes-e1568094999256.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"833\" height=\"1250\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Runners and dog lead<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My meditation time is while I run with our dog. I love the extendable lead because I can still run and so can the dog.
