THE Queenscliff Croquet Club celebrated its 100th birthday at the weekend, with a centenary dinner kicking off celebrations on the Friday night.
\nAttendees dressed up in old costumes for the evening event, which was then followed by a weekend of social croquet games involving all the croquet clubs in Geelong – Belmont, Drysdale, Eastern Park and Colac.
\nQueenscliff Croquet Club secretary Denise Spark said the club had been around for a very long time – 100 years, in fact!
\n\u201cIt came into existence in 1919-20 as something for the wives of the bowlers to do!\u201d Ms Spark said.
\n\u201cIn its 100 years the club has been through a number of changes but now enjoys a thriving and growing membership who play either association or golf croquet.
\n\u201cAs is the case for many Victorians, members of the Queenscliff Croquet Club relish the opportunities to get out into the fresh air, take some exercise and enjoy the fellowship of other club members.\u201d
\nMs Spark said croquet was played all year round, and there were plenty of members who played whatever the weather!
\n\u201cAlthough the games are \u201csocial\u201d, there is much use of the cunning strategies common to billiards!\u201d she said.
\n\u201cAs part of the centenary celebrations, during Seniors Week there will be a \u201cCome and Try\u201d on Saturday October 12.
\n\u201cIt is great fun to try to hit a ball through a hoop with one of the club\u2019s mallets.\u201d
