AFTER a sell-out event in Geelong last year, high-profile child psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg will return to the Bellarine next month – this time to Ocean Grove.
\nDr Carr-Gregg, best known as the resident psychologist on Channel 7’s Sunrise, will help local families navigate the tricky terrain of parenting with his seminar \u201cRaising Happy and Resilient Young People\u201d.
\nDubbed the child and adolescent whisperer, Dr Carr-Gregg said he was keen to return to the Bellarine given the number of young families on the Peninsula.
\n\u201cAdolescence is one of the most risky growth and developmental periods for our children and research shows that young people in rural and regional Victoria are especially at risk for anxiety, depression, substance abuse and self-harm.
\n\u201cWith this backdrop, it’s understandable for parents to feel overwhelmed, anxious and helpless.\u201d
\nDr Carr-Gregg will present information provided from contemporary positive psychological research and 30 years of clinical experience and will cover the actions that parents can take to build resilience and outline the common mistakes that parents make with their children and teenagers.
\n\u201cNow more than ever before, with parents faced with issues such as cyber-bullying, stress, drugs and sex, we need them to have the skills, knowledge and strategies to provide this generation\u2019s young people with the love, stability and routine that they need,\u201d he said.
\n\u201cApart from crossing your fingers and hoping for the best, it’s good to know there are some other things parents can do to help their children through adolescence.\u201d
