A MAJOR upgrade to drainage infrastructure around the Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre began earlier this week.
\nThe works will see new stormwater drainage pipework installed, to remove the flooding risk to buildings within Shell Road Reserve.
\nThere have been two significant flooding events in recent years, which have caused damage to the Bellarine Aquatic and Sports Centre and adjoining facilities.
\nAn engineering investigation identified that the existing infrastructure could be improved, to prevent any further issues.
\nCity of Greater Geelong director of community life Robyn Stevens said multiple flooding events had impacted on Shell Road Reserve buildings in recent years, leading to closures and clean-ups.
\n\u201cThis project will help prevent re-occurrences and ensure users can continue to enjoy the facilities all year round.
\n\u201cWe would encourage visitors to be patient during the works and to use the provided walkways in the precinct.\u201d
\nThe upgrade will see a total of 74 car parks fenced off \u2013 around the centre and Boorai Centre service road – to secure a safe construction area.
\nPublic access will be maintained via walkways, with traffic controllers to assist pedestrians to move around the site.
