THE City of Greater Geelong council is calling for community feedback on its revised dog control map, which focuses on Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.
\nThere are currently 11 dog control order maps within the municipality which identify specific areas for dogs, each with their own guidelines and rules around dog access.
\nThe revised dog control map, as well as horse zones, help create and maintain a balance in these open spaces, particularly on beaches, and simplifies the rules for all year round.
\nDirector Planning and Development Gareth Smith said Geelong and the Bellarine were experiencing high growth rates; which meant more people and their dogs were moving along our coastline.
\n\u201cThere are a number of \u2018on-leash\u2019 zones that play an important role in safety and wildlife protection, however, there are still plenty of spaces where you can take your dog off-leash,\u201d Mr Smith said.
\n\u201cBy creating this new map for dog controls, the city is improving its management of recreation along our coastlines, whilst also protecting and enhancing our biodiversity values.\u201d
\nThe City is committed to supporting Barwon Coast Committee of Management Inc (Barwon Coast) in providing safe and accessible coastal public spaces for all to enjoy.
\nBarwon Coast is the land manager of the coastline running between Connewarre and Collendina.
\nAs land manager, Barwon Coast must present proposed dog control orders to the City for consideration. If adopted, the City can patrol and enforce the new orders.
\nFeedback can be left by completing the online survey until November 22, via geelongaustralia.com.au\/yoursay\/item\/8d745949c2d4fa9.aspx or by attending a community consultation session at Bellarine Training and Community Hub, 1 John Dory Dr, Ocean Grove, on Saturday November 9 between 10am and 12pm, or Thursday November 14 between 4pm and 6pm.
