A NEW arts hub in Barwon Heads is one step closer, after council gave its approval to enter into a $1 million funding agreement with the state government to progress the project\u2019s design and construction.
\nThe state government committed $1 million towards an arts and community hub at 5-5A Clifford Parade before the 2018 state election.
\nThe City of Greater Geelong Council isn\u2019t required to contribute funding to the project, but the City owns the site.
\nThis site provides a range of options for how a new arts and community hub could be configured to meet the needs of the community.
\nFormer Mayor Bruce Harwood said Barwon Heads had a vibrant, inclusive arts community that continued to grow and he looked forward to hearing residents\u2019 thoughts about the project.
\n\u201cThe City will now investigate potential options for the site and report back to council early next year,\u201d Cr Harwood said.
\nCr Jim Mason said the council would analyse the location and design options carefully with guidance from the community and stakeholders, whilst also finding a financially sustainable solution.
\n\u201cBarwon Heads has both a strong arts presence and need for an arts and community hub in the township,\u201d Cr Mason said.
\nThe City welcomes the state government\u2019s contribution and is committed to getting the most out of the funding, to ensure there is a home for arts activity in Barwon Heads.
\nA report will be presented to council in early 2020 with options for the development of a hub.
\nThe community will be called on for feedback as part of the process and stakeholders will have the opportunity to inform the design by participating in the Project Reference Group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
