{"id":28498,"date":"2019-10-24T07:00:06","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T21:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=28498"},"modified":"2019-11-20T11:42:23","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T01:42:23","slug":"geelong-prepares-to-host-t20-world-cup-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/sport\/geelong-prepares-to-host-t20-world-cup-opener\/","title":{"rendered":"Geelong prepares to host T20 World Cup opener"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IT IS now less than a year until Geelong will host the opening match of the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 Men&#8217;s World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Kardinia Park has been selected as the venue for the first two games of the tournament.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>While qualifying for the World Cup is still ongoing, it has been confirmed that Sri Lanka will play in the first match on Friday October 18.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>City of Greater Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said she was delighted for Geelong to be part of the tournament.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Geelong is excited to be one of just eight Host Cities nationally for the first ICC Men&#8217;s T20 World Cup ever to be held in Australia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re sure our local community will embrace the event and join in the celebrations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Geelong will host six World Cup games in total, with all of them being double-headers. A single ticket will gain spectators entry to both games.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Tourism and Events portfolio chair Cr Ron Nelson said hosting the tournament was a great opportunity for the city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Geelong&#8217;s selection as a host city for this tournament further stamps us as a destination for major sporting events, and recognises Kardinia Park&#8217;s status as Australia&#8217;s best regional stadium.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Our local economy will receive a huge boost as thousands of spectators arrive for the week of matches.
