THIS week is Children’s Week, with children across the region taking part in a range of free activities.<\/p>\n

\n

The Surf Coast Shire has partnered with the YMCA Kids Go Bush program to run activities that help children enjoy nature while being active.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Today (Thursday, October 24), one of these events will be held at Anglesea Recreation Camp at 9.30am, followed by an event at the park at 30 Hesse Street, Winchelsea (next to Winchelsea Kindergarten) at 1pm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On Sunday October 27, Fishermans Beach in Torquay will host the Surf Coast Kite Festival. As well as spectacular giant kite demonstrations, this event will include face-painting, arts and crafts, animal displays and much more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

YMCA Kids Go Bush Nature Program Coordinator Elizabeth Haines said the program benefits children in many ways.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Outdoor learning is proven to improve all aspects of early childhood development, and certainly strengthens a child’s physical development in building core strength as they swing on ropes, to balancing on the uneven ground or logs rather than a standardised\u00a0playground.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Children are smart and they’re going to do what their confidence level allows. They might only climb to a certain branch when they’re three years old but by the time they’re 10, they will climb the whole tree. It’s dynamic risk assessing \u2013 what branches can I stand on and how far should I go.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As well as rope swinging and tree climbing, activities also include hut building and mud-pie making.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Surf Coast Shire mayor Rose Hodge said the events offered a great opportunity for people in the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“It’s a fabulous opportunity to connect with other community members and enjoy our beautiful region with your young ones.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
