OCEAN Grove Coastcare had a successful annual Tangaroa Blue Foundation clean-up day at Ocean Grove Main Beach on the weekend.
\nA total of 38 people, both young and old, attended and collected 56kg of rubbish from the beach and car parks – the rubbish was then sorted and counted.
\nThe rubbish data is provided to Tangaroa Blue to analyse, which provides them with a better understanding of coastal rubbish nationally, and to develop solutions to stop the flow of litter at the source.
\nTangaroa Blue is an Australia\u2013wide not for profit organisation dedicated to the removal and prevention of marine debris, one of the major environmental issues world wide.
\nSome of the statistics from the day were: 630 cigarette butts, 47 glass beer and alcohol bottles, 55 aluminium cans, 161 pieces of broken glass, and more than 1,000 pieces of plastic food wraps.
\nA spokesperson from Ocean Grove Coastcare said that while the main beach area was generally kept clean due to people correctly disposing of their rubbish, as well as regular clean-ups by Barwon Coast and individuals, there was certainly scope for people to be more responsible with their rubbish.
\nOcean Grove Coastcare is planning to run another event next year and hopefully there will be a lot less rubbish to collect.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
