{"id":29137,"date":"2019-11-28T07:00:38","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T21:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/young-lifesavers-step-up-ahead-of-summer\/"},"modified":"2019-11-28T07:00:38","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T21:00:38","slug":"young-lifesavers-step-up-ahead-of-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/young-lifesavers-step-up-ahead-of-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Young lifesavers step up ahead of summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Torquay Surf Life Saving Club (TSLSC) recently had a large group of young lifesavers take another step in their lifesaving careers.<\/p>\n<div>The 18 club lifesavers completed their 2019 Surf Rescue Certificates, which is the next step towards the lifesavers receiving their Bronze Medallions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>It also enables certificate recipients to develop their skills and learn from others while on patrol.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>TSLSC club captain Cam Mercer said it was great for the club to have so many young people progressing through the ranks at the club.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;To have such a big group of teenagers wanting to spend their weekends learning these skills and then joining a patrol for summer is fantastic for the future of lifesaving.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;This group had a mix of kids who had done years of Nippers but also some that are new to lifesaving, which is exactly the message we want to get out \u2013 it&#8217;s never too late to get involved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>TSLSC has specifically focused on the 14-17 year-old age group with their Youth Squad program.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Mr Mercer said creating a supportive social community had been a significant factor in the increased numbers coming through.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>&#8220;We&#8217;ve focused on creating a sense of belonging for these kids, they need to want to be here training, so it&#8217;s important to make it fun and a little bit social.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>TSLSC is running a Teen Bronze Camp in December for anyone aged 15-18 wanting to get involved.
