THE City of Greater Geelong is looking to improve road safety by reducing speed limits on several roads in the region.<\/p>\n

\n

The council recently submitted a list of roads where they want the limits reduced to VicRoads.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Roads included in the submission were Armstrong Creek roads Warrallily Boulevard and Unity Drive, which would drop from 50km\/h to 40km\/h.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer Martin Cutter said these measures were crucial to improving people’s safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Speed limit reductions have been identified as a pivotal step in reducing the frequency and severity of road accidents in this area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“We continue to work closely with all levels of government to achieve the Towards Zero vision for zero fatalities and serious injuries.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The majority of the suggested changes will reduce speed limits by 10-20km\/h.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

One of the proposed changes is for the entirety of Arrigo Drive in Wallington to drop from 100km\/h to 60km\/h, although the road is only about a kilometre long.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Director of city services Guy Wilson-Browne said the council considered a range of factors when choosing roads for speed limit reduction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“In some instances, the applications come from significant traffic studies in suburbs or townships where there are particular road safety concerns. During this process, community members are invited to identify and discuss solutions to all local traffic issues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“We also work closely with Victoria Police and VicRoads to identify potential road safety issues and can apply for speed limit reductions based on findings and advice from these agencies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“Plus, we respond to community requests for reducing speed limits by conducting traffic studies and applying for reductions where speed is found to be a significant safety factor.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The COGG has also recommended reduced limits for Purnell Road, Princess Road, Donnybrook Road, Sparks Road, and sections of Anakie Road, Carr Street, Horseshoe Bend Road, Heales Road, Mill Road and Avalon Road.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
