{"id":29371,"date":"2019-12-12T09:20:02","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T23:20:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=29371"},"modified":"2019-12-13T08:15:45","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T22:15:45","slug":"harold-waldron-parkinsons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/harold-waldron-parkinsons\/","title":{"rendered":"Big heart reaps big honour: award named after Portarlington resident"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A PORTARLINGTON man has had a Parkinson\u2019s Victoria award named in his honour to formally recognise his and others\u2019 selfless work in supporting the Parkinson\u2019s community.<\/p>\n<p>The Harold Waldron Carer\u2019s Award was announced at the recent Parkinson\u2019s Victoria annual general meeting, with Mr Waldron officially retiring from his leadership position thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Waldron has been advocating for his local Parkinson\u2019s community for more than 38 years, serving 31 as leader of the Geelong Parkinson\u2019s Peer Support Group.<\/p>\n<p>The 91-year-old spent much of his adulthood caring for his wife Margaret, who suffered from the incurable condition.<\/p>\n<p>The couple attended the inaugural Geelong Parkinson\u2019s Peer Support Group meeting in 1981, and Mr Waldron became leader in 1987.<\/p>\n<p>Following his wife\u2019s passing in 1999, his commitment to helping people affected by Parkinson\u2019s never wavered and he remained in the group\u2019s top position.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Waldron said he had been connected to Parkinson\u2019s for many years and that the friendships formed throughout this period were ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very, very thankful that I have been able to help so many people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives you a nice feeling when you get a recently diagnosed person ring up and you spend sometimes 15, 20 minutes on the phone with them, trying to convince them that they can still carry on with their life for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParkinson\u2019s is an insidious disease, and it affects everyone so differently. The only good thing about is, if you can call it a good thing, is that it\u2019s not life threatening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parkinson\u2019s Victoria chief executive officer Emma Collin said Mr Waldron\u2019s legacy was one of nobility, having won Parkinson\u2019s Victoria\u2019s highest honour \u2013 the Sir Zelman Cowen Award \u2013 in 2008, along with every other accolade he could achieve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarold has received every honour we are able to award. His dedication and care for others is an example and inspiration to us all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Harold Waldron Carer\u2019s Award will recognise a family member or friend who has been touched by Parkinson\u2019s and made a lasting difference to the Parkinson\u2019s community, either through their voluntary leadership or support of one.<\/p>\n<p>The maiden Harold Waldron Carer\u2019s Award will be announced at next year\u2019s Parkinson\u2019s Victoria AGM.<\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parkinsonsvic.org.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Parkinson\u2019s Victoria<\/a> 2019 Recognition Awards received by Geelong and Bellarine residents include Richard Grimmett, Mike Atkinson, Louise and Paul Zajac and Kirsten George.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A PORTARLINGTON man has had a Parkinson\u2019s Victoria award named in his honour to formally recognise his and others\u2019 selfless work in supporting the Parkinson\u2019s community.
