THE Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC) has cancelled its annual Australia Day fireworks display in response to the growing number of fire victims across the country. <\/p>\n
Royal Geelong Yacht Club commodore John Kint said while the decision may disappoint some people, the club and the City of Greater Geelong felt it was a \u201crespectful acknowledgement\u201d of the continuing bushfire crisis. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are currently investigating if there are other entertainment options which may be more appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n
City of Greater Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said the council was pleased with the decision. <\/p>\n
\u201cI wrote to the RGYC on behalf of the council group, outlining feedback from the community that it would be appropriate to avoid fireworks in greater Geelong during this time.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re hopeful that the RGYC will find an alternative for the Australia Day celebrations at a time when spirits across Australia really could do with a lift.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
