Davey, who was appointed to the top job at Ray Menzies Oval last September, was less than three weeks away from guiding the Grubbers into battle for the first time when matches were called off.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s been really difficult,\u201d he said. \u201cWe had a great (pre-season) camp, and we shared a lot of information about myself and about the players in front of each other, and set the tone for what the next period of time would look like.<br \/>\n\u201cThe last couple of months, we had regular Zoom meetings at the start, and you could see the motivation of the guys start to drop off a little bit.<br \/>\n\u201cThe first night, we had 40 people tuning in, and you see the numbers start to dwindle.<br \/>\n\u201cYou do what you can by text message and phone and social media.<br \/>\n\u201cBut, there\u2019s nothing like sitting down (and) having a coffee with someone or putting your arm around them when you\u2019re at training and having a chat and asking them how they\u2019re going.\u201d<br \/>\nOcean Grove was one of a handful of BFL clubs to take advantage of the easing of restrictions and returned to training last week.<br \/>\nDavey labelled the first night \u201cone of the more bizarre training sessions\u201d he\u2019d been involved in.<br \/>\n\u201c(It had) a funny feel around it,\u201d Davey said. \u201cBut (it was) just great to catch up with everyone.<br \/>\n\u201cAnd once the footy starts spinning around and the banter picks up again, and guys get to see each other, that\u2019s what it was all about.<br \/>\n\u201cIt wasn\u2019t about skills or fitness or anything like that; it was about getting the guys back together again.&#8221;<br \/>\nA decision from AFL Barwon on the BFL and Geelong Football League getting underway was yet to be made at the time of going to print.<br \/>\nA scheduled meeting of the AFL Barwon Commission on June 9 has been set as the deadline for the final call.<br \/>\nDavey is leaning towards the season not going ahead.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s doing everyone\u2019s heads in at the moment not knowing what\u2019s going to happen,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cI would love to say there will be senior footy, but I\u2019m probably 20 per cent \u2018yes\u2019 and 80 per cent \u2018no\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Tom King is the editor of <a href=\"http:\/\/krockfootball.com.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">krockfootball.com.au<\/a>.
