{"id":32832,"date":"2020-06-18T00:53:11","date_gmt":"2020-06-17T14:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=32832"},"modified":"2020-06-24T09:54:52","modified_gmt":"2020-06-23T23:54:52","slug":"relay-for-life-goes-virtual-for-the-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/relay-for-life-goes-virtual-for-the-first-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Relay for Life goes virtual for the first time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Cancer Council has announced this year\u2019s Relay for Life event will take place virtually on their website.<br \/>\nEvery dollar donated to the nation-wide online fundraiser will see the baton move one kilometre around Australia along the relay path, \u2018passing the baton\u2019 to the next donor to take further.<br \/>\nThe Cancer Council hopes to complete 20 laps of the country by June 25 to represent the 20 years Relay for Life events that have been held.<br \/>\nParticipants in the virtual relay will be able to donate money to the Cancer Council and leave public messages on their tribute wall.<br \/>\nThe Surf Coast\u2019s Relay event was scheduled to take place in March but organisers cancelled the event due to COVID-19 restrictions.<br \/>\nSurf Coast Relay for Life president Bob Tyler said it\u2019s important the relay took place in a new format to support fundraising for much-needed cancer research.<br \/>\n\u201cI know everything happening with coronavirus is pretty bad, but cancer has been around for a long time and it\u2019ll stick around if we don\u2019t find a cure for it.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Surf Coast organisation had began raising money before the original event was cancelled earlier this year.<br \/>\n\u201cWe put a lot of work into it and did a fair bit of fundraising beforehand and we now know that Surf Coast had already raised $32,000,\u201d Mr Tyler said.<br \/>\nThe community was disappointed when the event was cancelled, but Mr Tyler said he and his team were already looking ahead to next year\u2019s event.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re prepared and have already booked the oval for next year and we\u2019ll be ready to go as soon as we are allowed.\u201d<br \/>\nFor now, the organisation is hoping the public will donate to the virtual relay and continue to raise awareness for cancer research.<br \/>\nFor more information about Relay for Life, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/cancercouncilfundraising.com.au\/relay-for-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">cancercouncilfundraising.com.au\/relay-for-life<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Cancer Council has announced this year\u2019s Relay for Life event will take place virtually on their website.
