THE first of 1,000 new public properties the state government plans to build by late 2022 have been constructed in Norlane.<\/p>\n
The 26 properties built in the suburb all have seven-star energy ratings and were designed to be consistent with the neighbourhood\u2019s character.<\/p>\n
They were built as part of the state government\u2019s $209 million 1,000 homes program, which identifies the City of Greater Geelong as one six councils in Victoria that have the highest rates of homelessness.<\/p>\n
State Minister for Housing Richard Wynne said the new houses would significantly help reduce homelessness.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone deserves the safety and security of a roof over their head \u2013 we\u2019re making sure people can access secure housing to get their lives back on track,\u201d Mr Wynne.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur record funding is making sure people sleeping rough, at risk of homelessness, and those escaping family violence can find a home.\u201d<\/p>\n
A further 36 public houses will be completed in Geelong over the next year.<\/p>\n
Member for Lara John Eren said the new public properties would greatly benefit their tenants.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese new homes will make the world of difference to people in our community who need support by providing them with the stability and safety to get ahead and thrive,\u201d Mr Eren said.<\/p>\n
\u201cGetting a job, participating in the community and turning your life around is more achievable with a safe and secure place to call home \u2013 these new homes do exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n
The buildings are mainly one and two-bedroom properties, with some three-bedroom properties as well.<\/p>\n
In February this year, the City of Greater Geelong endorsed the Social Housing Plan 2020 \u2013 2041.<\/p>\n
The plan states \u201cit is estimated that a Social Housing Plan designed to overcome homelessness and housing poverty (in the City of Greater Geelong) will need to deliver 13,500 new social housing dwellings by 2041.\u201d<\/p>\n
