AS THE holiday season fast approaches, Victoria Police have used Operation Summersafe to turn up the heat on bad behaviour across Greater Geelong, the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula.<\/p>\n
In previous years the summer period in the past has seen the population of the coastal area increase by about 150,000 people looking for a beach holiday.<\/p>\n
In response to this, Operation Summersafe will increase policing operations running from December through to the end of January.<\/p>\n
Victoria Police have again identified road safety as a priority with officers beginning to have a visible presence on the roads.<\/p>\n
Road policing operations will target speeding, drink and drug driving, people not wearing seatbelts and driver distractions including mobile phones and fatigue.<\/p>\n
“We know many people will be particularly keen to travel to our coastal areas and enjoy the sunshine over the Summer period, but we ask that you do so safely,” Geelong Superintendent Craig Gillard said.<\/p>\n
With the festive season approaching, Supt Gillard has warned the public about the effects of binge drinking leading to acts of violence and disruptions.<\/p>\n
“Police will not allow anyone to engage in criminal or disruptive behaviour, particularly those that have a negative impact on the rest of the community,” he said.<\/p>\n
With many choosing to holiday locally this year, members of the public can expect to see the police patrolling busy locations such as beaches, parks and venues.<\/p>\n
Police will also work with local councils to prevent the public from drinking in areas where alcohol is banned after recognising binge drinking behaviours taking place outside of licensed venues including at local beaches and house parties.<\/p>\n
“It’s important to show respect for the communities, venues and private property you might be visiting and call out responsible behaviour when you see it,” Supt Gillard said.<\/p>\n
