A SUSPECTED pipe failure has caused a sinkhole to appear on Myers Street with State Emergency Services first on the scene.<\/p>\n

The three-metre-deep hole was reported this morning with Geelong police attending the scene at about 10.30am.<\/p>\n

Police quickly gained control of the situation, which was obstructing traffic along the busy city road.<\/p>\n

It is believed a vehicle had driven over the sinkhole before it was reported to police.<\/p>\n

The Geelong SES Unit were called to the scene before the matter was referred to Barwon Water.<\/p>\n

An SES spokesperson said appropriate measures had been made before their arrival.<\/p>\n

“When we arrived Victoria Police had it under control, they had already contacted council and Barwon Water so they made the decision to stand us down.”<\/p>\n

Barwon Water acting managing director Shaun Cumming said they believe the issue has been detected.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are responding to a suspected sewer pipe issue that has caused minor damage to the road on Myers Street, adjacent to the Haymarket Carpark,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Cumming said traffic will continue to be diverted via the parking lane until the sinkhole could be further investigated by Barwon Water.<\/p>\n

There is believed to be no disruption to the sewerage services provided to customers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe apologise for the inconvenience and will provide further updates via social media,\u201d Mr Cumming said.<\/p>\n

The cause of the sinkhole has yet to be confirmed as the investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n
