Forest and park tracks and roads across the otway District re-opened last week, just in time for the Melbourne Cup weekend.<\/p>\n
Forest Fire Management Victoria senior forest management and roading officer Craig Clifford said roads and tracks were closed temporarily to protect them from damage during the wetter months each year as part of the department\u2019s seasonal road closure program.<\/p>\n
\u201cthese roads and tracks were closed over winter and spring for public safety and to protect track surfaces as well as water quality and the forest environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cthe Forest and Park environment is a wonderful place to visit.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, we want people to be mindful of the camp fire regulations and ensure that camp fires are maintained and left in a safe condition.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the onset of warmer weather, Mr Clifford said it was critical that the organisation and track users worked together to minimise the potential spread of bushfires.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile we have made every effort to ensure visitors have access for the opening weekend, drivers need to be prepared to come across fallen trees and other debris in some places.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would like to thank the many Four Wheel Drive Victoria volunteers who put in hundreds of hours of work to assist with the maintenance and promotion of seasonal road closures for the ongoing protection of Victoria\u2019s parks and forests.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s great to see volunteers so committed to working in partnership for the betterment of Victoria\u2019s natural spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n
