{"id":38530,"date":"2021-03-11T00:21:33","date_gmt":"2021-03-10T13:21:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/pm-sticking-to-october-covid-vaccine-goal\/"},"modified":"2021-03-11T12:50:42","modified_gmt":"2021-03-11T01:50:42","slug":"pm-sticking-to-october-covid-vaccine-goal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/pm-sticking-to-october-covid-vaccine-goal\/","title":{"rendered":"PM sticking to October COVID vaccine goal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PRIME Minister Scott Morrison is sticking to the federal government\u2019s population-wide coronavirus vaccine October goal despite delays in the initial rollout.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors and other experts have warned the target will not be met after logistical issues and minor bungles put the jabs behind schedule.<\/p>\n<p>More than 86,000 people had received their first injection as of Sunday, which marked the second week of the rollout.<\/p>\n<p>While the program was always designed to ramp up as it progressed, the government now needs to dramatically increase administration to reach its goal.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Morrison said he remained confident all Australians who wanted a vaccine would have access to one by the end of October.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#8217;t mean we won&#8217;t hit some obstacles,\u201d he told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday this week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn&#8217;t mean there won\u2019t be the odd frustration, the odd logistics issue that needs to be addressed. That\u2019s to be expected with a project of this scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister expects the figure to break 100,000 this week, fuelled by supplies of overseas-produced vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the month, doses of the AstraZeneca jab produced in Melbourne are expected to be added to the network at a rate of about one million a week.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Morrison said early issues had been resolved as he declared total confidence in the vaccination program led by medical experts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a strategy that was pulled together last year and has been meticulously worked through even now as we roll the vaccines out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the prime minister\u2019s department fronted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Parliamentary_Business\/Committees\/Senate\/COVID-19\/COVID19\">Senate\u2019s coronavirus response committee<\/a> on Tuesday this week to face questions about his efforts to better co-ordinate restrictions between states.<\/p>\n<p>He is working with his state and territory counterparts on analysing changing risk profiles as vaccinations boost Australia efforts to remain on top of coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government is also taking steps to ensure communications are targeted to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, who have an increased risk of serious disease.<\/p>\n<p>Coronavirus vaccines will start arriving on the Torres Strait islands in coming days and Cape York joins the rollout soon after.<\/p>\n<p>The islands closest to Papua New Guinea will receive the first vaccinations given the risk the disease could spread from Australia\u2019s close neighbour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PRIME Minister Scott Morrison is sticking to the federal government\u2019s population-wide coronavirus vaccine October goal despite delays in the initial rollout.
