WORKS to upgrade Portarlington’s pier for future generations has commenced this week with the state government set to improve its safety while supporting local jobs.<\/p>\n
The $9.6 million upgrades to the pier are anticipated to enhance the safety for commercial operators, pedestrians, recreational boaters and fishers using the facility.<\/p>\n
Ferry access will also be upgraded under the developments with the new covered walkway to separate pedestrians from vehicle access of commercial operators which currently share the space.<\/p>\n
While improvements to the current pier are now under construction, the old structure which has been closed since 2018 will be demolished under the development plans.<\/p>\n
Over 24 million dollars has been committed under the pier and Jetty Maintenance package, currently set aside to improve the safety of up to nine facilities across the state.<\/p>\n
The project forms a part of the Victorian government’s $328.4 million investment in critical freight, boating, public transport and roads maintenance which is anticipated to create more than 600 jobs.<\/p>\n
Other works funded under the package include an upgrade to the Queenscliff South Pier lifeboat shed which involves the structural repair and restoration of the building.<\/p>\n
Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne said the new safety measures will also provide economic aid to regional communities.<\/p>\n
“Our significant work to improve the Portarlington Pier will support the local economy – as well as commercial operators, fishers and boaters and the wider community,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Our Building Works package is investing in local communities, supporting local jobs as our economy recovers.<\/p>\n
While improvements are underway, Parks Victoria will undertake routine dredging in Portarlington’s Harbour to enhance vessel access.<\/p>\n
The Old Portarlington Pier remains closed for community safety with priority access given as necessary.<\/p>\n
Construction is anticipated to be completed by September 2022 with on-site works set to pause during peak summer periods.<\/p>\n
