{"id":40241,"date":"2021-05-06T02:44:52","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T15:44:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=40241"},"modified":"2021-05-05T11:53:12","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T00:53:12","slug":"lions-put-generous-wheels-in-motion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/lions-put-generous-wheels-in-motion\/","title":{"rendered":"Lions put generous wheels in motion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DEDICATED members of the Lions Club of Corio Norlane are making a difference throughout the Geelong community thanks to a trio of programs which provide essential items to those in need.<\/p>\n<p>The club, which was established nine years ago, passes on refurbished bikes and computers to those who can\u2019t afford them, as well as running the Road Home Geelong program which provides winter goods to the homeless and those sleeping rough.<\/p>\n<p>Club secretary Richard Walter said the second-hand bike project was in its seventh year and during that time more than 2500 bikes had been handed over to children and adults who might otherwise have gone without.<\/p>\n<p>He said the club wanted to ensure everyone had the opportunity to use a bike to exercise or get themselves to school or work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe collect them from police stations and then we also put it out to the community and we do get a reasonable amount of donations from people who have grown out of them or no longer use them,\u201d Mr Walter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe clean them up and make sure they are in working order and then donate them on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are for people who can\u2019t afford to pay for it or can only afford to pay a small amount of money as a donation to the club.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40244\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40244\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40244\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/05\/96266981_2937281272_06975.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40244\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers keep busy delivering bikes to those in need. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Walter said there are about 15 Lions clubs in the region but there was no similar program so it was agreed the Corio Norlane branch would provide the service across Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>The second-hand computer program started nine years ago and fills a similar gap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf businesses or schools have computers that are being retired then we will accept those and we will upgrade them and pass them on to those in need, as we do with the bikes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40250\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40250\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40250\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/05\/78923323_2996207527_64060.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Walter from the Lions Club of Corio Norlane pictured with students and some of the donated refurbished computers. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Club volunteers also run a bike safety education program in primary schools which is supported by VicRoads who provide the Bike Ed trailer which contains student bicycles, adult bicycles, helmets, vests and dome markers.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Road Home Geelong program started nine years after the club identified a local need for blankets for the homeless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe collect donated winter items \u2013 jackets, blankets, socks, scarfs, beanies, gloves or anything winter-related \u2013 that we can pass on to homeless people or those in the midst of homelessness who might be living in their car or couch surfing,\u201d Mr Walter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe collect those things and pass them onto the agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40246\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40246\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40246\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/05\/20210326_111551_res_21048.jpg?_t=1620175893\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40246\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cassie pictured with the laptop she gratefully received through the Lions Club of Corio Norlane&#8217;s computer program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged agencies to reach out to the Lions if there was a need to be filled and they would endeavour to help.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Walter said the Corio Norlane club had 25 members but was always open to more help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good number but for the amount we do it can be a bit of a struggle,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who is willing to put a bit of voluntary time in to the help the community is welcome to join us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anyone interested in donating items or those interested in volunteering with the Lions Club of Corio Norlane, or connect with their nearest club, can email coriolions@gmail.com or phone 0490 802 003.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DEDICATED members of the Lions Club of Corio Norlane are making a difference throughout the Geelong community thanks to a trio of programs which provide essential items to those in need.
