{"id":40372,"date":"2021-05-06T02:30:07","date_gmt":"2021-05-05T15:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/foster-mums-give-the-greatest-gift\/"},"modified":"2021-05-19T12:14:47","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T01:14:47","slug":"foster-mums-give-the-greatest-gift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/news\/foster-mums-give-the-greatest-gift\/","title":{"rendered":"Foster mums give the greatest gift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CELEBRATING Mother\u2019s Day is extra special for Karen who is among more than 50 women in our region who fulfill the vital role of foster mum.<\/p>\n<p>Karen and her husband Cameron have stepped up to play a part in the lives of many young people since signing up as foster carers with BCYF five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, we had a brother and sister, the girl did a lovely card, saying \u2018Happy Foster Mum\u2019s Day\u2019,\u201d Karen remembers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s really sweet and I\u2019ve still got that. She did it for Father\u2019s Day as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes you feel useful and important, you feel like you\u2019re doing good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bellarine couple has cared for children as young as two and as old as 17 but they mostly look after children between the ages of eight and 12.<\/p>\n<p>Karen says after her three biological children grew up and left home, she felt she still had more to give and was fuelled by a desire to give back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted a bigger challenge,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWork was becoming a bit boring, my own children had grown up and they were fairly self-sufficient and I was missing young people\u2019s company in the home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also wanted to give back. Photo: KRISTI CLAPINSKI<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The couple enjoys providing fun activities for those in their care, including days at Adventure Park and bushwalks at the You Yangs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get to see the world through a young person\u2019s eyes,\u201d Karen says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou also can keep in touch with the young generation when you normally wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen and Cameron have done a wide variety of foster care, including long term care, and their focus at the moment is on emergency care and respite.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency care provides accommodation for children and young people in an emergency and can often be required at a moment\u2019s notice, at any time of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Respite care provides support for a child or young person\u2019s parents, guardians or regular foster carers by enabling them to have a break, and it helps builds the circle of caring people around a child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best thing about emergency care and respite is the sheer difference in kids,\u201d Karen explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe variety of circumstances, the variety of reactions, these are the challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get to know the kids and get them to trust you.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51722\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51722\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51722 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/05\/Karen-Mothers-Day-2021-1-of-1-3-200x300.jpg?_t=1620020408\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Karen and her husband Cameron joined BCYF&#8217;s foster care program five years ago.
