THE Lions Club of Ocean Grove – Barwon Heads is looking for new projects in their community to support.<\/p>\n
Serving the local community for more than 60 years, the organisation fundraises through wheelbarrow raffles in local caravan parks and sausage sizzles at Bunnings and at local events.<\/p>\n
Lion John Claringbold said each year the income generated from these fundraising activities was distributed between community organisations, as well as local families and individuals.<\/p>\n
“During the year the club has been involved in a number of projects,” Mr Claringbold said.<\/p>\n
“A local family was the recipient of $1000, and we expect to add to that figure in the near future as their car needs to be modified to accommodate a wheelchair.”<\/p>\n
Mr Claringbold said the most significant project had culminated in the club entering into a partnership with genU.<\/p>\n
“The Dare Street, Ocean Grove redevelopment of the community accommodation will commence later this year,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Lions Ed Corless, John Brady and especially Bill Willocks worked tirelessly over 15 years to raise monies through investment in land and houses.”<\/p>\n
Mr Claringbold said other donations included The Lions Licola Wilderness Camp, which was an ongoing commitment to sponsor local children to attend the five-day camp every January.<\/p>\n
“The club combines with local businesses and families to cover the costs involved,” he said.<\/p>\n
Mr Claringbold said the Australia Day Kite project had also been going for at least 15 years.<\/p>\n
“Materials for 200 kites are ready to be assembled with the help of Lion members, and the Ocean Grove Main Beach comes alive with enthusiastic children trying to keep their kites airborne.”<\/p>\n
Mr Claringbold said every month the club also cooked a two-course meal for the local senior citizens, and supported the Care Alert Community Program, which was a free service, installed in a person’s home.<\/p>\n
“Care Alert unit will dial up to five pre-programmed numbers, including 000,” he said.<\/p>\n
“The units are suitable for people who have ongoing health issues.<\/p>\n
“Over 20 units have been installed in the community.”<\/p>\n
Each year, the five local primary schools receive $200 Encouragement Awards for school nominated Year 6 students, while the Ian Walter Community Service Award ($250) is for a senior student from Bellarine Secondary College.<\/p>\n
Mr Claringbold said the club was looking for new projects in their local community and this was an opportunity for people to make some suggestions.<\/p>\n
“Your ideas will then enable us to plan ahead and respond to local needs,” he said.<\/p>\n
