{"id":42237,"date":"2021-06-25T13:00:41","date_gmt":"2021-06-25T03:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/?p=42237"},"modified":"2021-06-25T09:58:12","modified_gmt":"2021-06-24T23:58:12","slug":"shortest-day-followed-by-longest-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bellarinetimes\/featured\/shortest-day-followed-by-longest-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Shortest day followed by longest night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BELLARINE residents have celebrated the southern hemisphere\u2019s winter solstice by taking a freezing cold dip in the Barwon River.<\/p>\n<p>Participants from regular Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove swim groups \u2013 including River Swimmers, RAAF\u2019s Icebergers and Ocean Swimmers \u2013 took part in the event.<\/p>\n<p>Organiser Adie Currie said she organised the swim to embrace the winter spirit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinter can be such a gloomy time, particularly throughout COVID, and going out into the ocean brings people together, it\u2019s calming and grounding,\u201d Ms Currie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be able to celebrate the solstice by doing something we love with the community is really special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winter solstice occurs when the Earth\u2019s southern pole tilt is at its farthest point from the sun.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the darkness, cold weather and howling winds, many swimmers claimed they would do it all again.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Currie said the cold water was invigorating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gives you a high, you don\u2019t really think about anything else while you\u2019re doing it because you\u2019re trying to stay warm and concentrating on your breathing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love the ocean and the health benefits of swimming in the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of the swimmers had glow sticks, some wore wetsuits but others took the plunge wearing no more than bathers.<\/p>\n<p>The swim started at Barwon Heads jetty, and participants then swam with the incoming tide, under the Barwon Heads bridge to finally arrive at the Ozone Jetty.<\/p>\n<p>Regular RAAF\u2019s Iceberger swimmer Murray Joseph spoke to the Times as he was about to take the plunge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not regretting it yet\u2026but, I might be once we get in the water,\u201d Mr Joseph chuckled.<\/p>\n<p>Winter solstice is also known as the \u2018shortest day\u2019 as it is the day of the year with the least amount of daylight hours.<\/p>\n<p>The Bellarine and Surf Coast experienced just 9 hours and 32 minutes of daylight on the solstice day.<\/p>\n<p>The extra darkness also provided some much-needed cover for another annual event.
