A DANGEROUS stretch of road between Portarlington and Queenscliff will be made safer through the federal government\u2019s Road Safety Program.<\/p>\n
The stretch of Queenscliff Road will receive $4.5 million in upgrades.<\/p>\n
There have been several serious crashes on this road including a double fatality in 2019 and another serious crash in 2017.<\/p>\n
The project will involve sealing the shoulders of the road, widening intersections to enable safe turns and U-turns, street lighting to improve visibility for road users at night, the installation of safety barriers at high-risk locations, and other safety improvements.<\/p>\n
Work is expected to start in the coming weeks and expected to be completed by the end of 2021.<\/p>\n
Victorian Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson inspected part of the road earlier this week.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a very significant investment in road safety on the Bellarine,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTraffic along the Portarlington to Queenscliff road has increased quite dramatically with population growth and there are sections of the road which urgently need improving.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis investment builds on the hundreds of millions of dollars the Morrison Government is investing in road safety upgrades across the Corangamite electorate.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Morrison Government has committed $3 billion to the Road Safety Program over three years from 2020-21.<\/p>\n
The funding supports the fast roll out of lifesaving road safety treatments on rural and regional roads and greater protection for vulnerable road users, such as cyclists and pedestrians, in urban areas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
